Making wood for images in Paint Shop Pro 6

In doing this tutorial, remember that your images in each section will not look exactly like the examples.
And the settings in the tool dialog boxes may be very different from mine.  The only one that has to
be like mine for sure is the Picture Tube Step setting which should be set on #1. And the size setting should
not be too large....around 39 or so is good.  I was going to make the tube I used here available,
but neither of my servers will allow a zip file to be uploaded.
So I went back to the tube files and I see that the "nuts" tube in PSP 6 will
work very well for creating wood....in fact it will probably make more attractive wood than
my tube did in this example.

Be sure to start your image on level one above the background.

Start with the picture tube using thetube called "nuts".......which is different from the tube I used in this example.
First make a level one above the background.  On that level one, use the picture tube to "paint" a rectangular area.  To do this you must set the Step to #1.  The Scale number can vary but you don't want it too big.  I used 36 for this one.  You can "paint" an area and then use the selection tool to cut out a rectangular area if you choose.
This will give you an area that looks something like this:

Now use your Retouch Tool
Rub across the image with this retouch tool, making the area look something like this:
Don't overdo the smudging...you want it to have some varied coloring. And if you don't like your result, play with the opacity/hardness/density settings.

Selection and outer beveling

With the Magic Wand, click anywhere on the image. It will look something like this:

If you like the area that has been selected, continue on.  If not select another or change the tolerance settings on the Magic Wand tool so that either more or less of an area is selected.  Now, Inner Bevel the area and then get rid of the selection lines with Ctrl d to see if you like the result. If you don't like the result, change the settings on the Inner Bevel and try again. Try the different choices in "Presets" to see what you like.
Mine looked like this after beveling with the settings shown:
